The Azusa Police Department’s Traffic Bureau is dedicated to keeping our roads safe and accessible for all. Through consistent traffic enforcement and focused collision investigations, officers aim to reduce injuries, prevent accidents, and encourage responsible driving behavior. The bureau uses a combination of education, engineering, and enforcement to make measurable progress in traffic safety year after year.
Why Citations Matter
No one enjoys receiving a ticket—but traffic citations play a proven role in reducing collisions and reminding drivers to stay alert behind the wheel. Officers in the Traffic Bureau, especially motor officers, encounter common violations daily and issue citations as both a corrective tool and a preventive one.
While many drivers focus on speeding and red light violations, the most frequent—and preventable—issues they observe include:
- Using a cell phone without a hands-free device
- Not using a seat belt
- Failing to properly secure children in car seats
- Not yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks
- Jaywalking near schools
- Failing to slow down in school zones
These violations put lives at risk, especially children. The majority of complaints received by the Traffic Bureau stem from unsafe behavior during school drop-offs and pick-ups. Parents are reminded to use designated zones, follow traffic laws, and model safe behavior for their children.
When Accidents Happen, We Find Out Why
In addition to enforcement, the Traffic Bureau is responsible for investigating serious or unusual traffic collisions. Officers assigned to this division undergo specialized California POST-certified training to better understand how and why collisions occur. Their investigations help identify patterns and contributing factors—such as distracted driving, unsafe speeds, or driving under the influence.
