Types of Restraining Orders
There are four main types of restraining orders available through the courts:
- Domestic Violence
- Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse
- Civil Harassment
- Workplace Violence
Each type protects against different kinds of threats and relationships. Read below for a breakdown of each.



Domestic Violence
A court order to protect people from abuse or threats of abuse from someone they have a close relationship with.

Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse
Protects individuals 65+ or dependent adults (18–64) with certain physical or mental disabilities from physical abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation.

Civil Harassment
Covers stalking, threats, and serious harassment by someone you do not have a close relationship with (ex. a neighbor, roommate, or stranger)

Workplace Violence
Must be requested by an employer on behalf of an employee. Protects against threats or violence occurring at or related to the workplace.

Filing Instructions
To file a restraining order, you must notify the other party of your intent at least 24 hours in advance (by phone or in person). You may then file at:
Steps to File:
- Obtain the necessary forms from the Court Clerk’s Office (Room #101) or download them online.
- Complete all paperwork using black ink.
- Submit the documents to Room #101. Deadlines for same-day hearings.
- Temporary Civil Harassment and Elder Abuse: Submit by 8:30 AM
- Temporary Domestic Violence: Submit by 1:00 PM
- After the judge signs, return to Room #101 to receive certified copies.
- If the respondent did not attend the hearing, you must serve them with a copy and file proof of service.
Fee Waivers: There is no filing fee for Domestic Violence or Elder Abuse restraining orders.

Serving a Restraining Order
The person being served must be notified of the order. Service may be completed by anyone 18+ who is not a party to the case or by a registered process server.
After the order is served:
- Complete a Proof of Service form
- File it with the Azusa Police Department
- Azusa PD only accepts certified copies of “Order After Hearing” documents
